Olivia "Jane" Jackson Stephens [March 12, 1943 - October 26, 2013]

Jane Jackson Stephens, 70, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, in Amarillo.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, 1717 4th Ave. in Canyon, with The Rev. Don Stribling, First Presbyterian Church of Jerseyville, IL, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 904 19th St., in Canyon.

Jane Jackson was born on March 12, 1943, in Pampa, Texas, to James R. and Geneva Jackson. The first of three sisters born to the Jacksons, Jane was the “big sister.” She learned responsibility early in life. Some of her younger days were spent in Childress, Texas, living with her paternal grandparents while her father served overseas during World War II. She had many fond memories of the Childress days, caring for a baby deer, building tumbleweed forts, and being spoiled by her grandmother. Her father’s career as an Air Corps serviceman allowed the family to live in several states. His final duty station was at Dyess Air Force base in Abilene. Jane graduated from Abilene High School in 1961.
That fall, she followed in her mother’s footsteps and enrolled at West Texas State University. During her college days, Jane worked at several campus jobs and was elected to three scholastic honor societies. She served as student assistant in the History Department and as a student counselor for the Hogg Foundation her senior year. That year, Jane was also elected to Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities. On Thanksgiving Day 1963, Jane married J. Pat Stephens. She graduated with a B.A. in History in 1964 and began her teaching career at Amarillo High School. She later taught History at Hickman High in Columbia, Missouri. Returning to Canyon, Jane taught French and Social Studies at Canyon High through the 1969 school year.

On February 21, 1970, Jennifer Kay was born to the Stephens’ family and Robert Patrick arrived a year later. Jane raised her family until 1976 when she returned to the classroom at Canyon High. While caring for her children and teaching, Jane also found time to earn her Master’s degree and become a certified counselor. Her formal education never ceased. She earned every educational certification offered by the state of Texas.
In 1984, she became Canyon High’s counselor and served in that position until 1987 when she was appointed Director of Secondary Curriculum for the Canyon Independent School District. Five years later, Jane became Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and served in that capacity until the school board appointed her Acting Superintendent after Mike King’s retirement. In 2000, she “retired.”
After her retirement from CISD, Jane worked for WTAMU’s Education Department as mentor for superintendent and principal interns; served as Education Director for the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum; taught at Ascension Academy for three years; served as TEA consultant to the Hereford ISD; and took on ad hoc assignments for other organizations. She was elected to the CISD Board of Trustees in 2005 and reelected in 2008. She never ceased being a teacher; at the time of her death, she was teaching a confirmation class at First Presbyterian Church where she also served as Ruling Elder. Jane Stephens was likely the world’s worst “retirer.”
But she was the world’s best listener. She had that rare gift of really hearing what people said. Her counseling abilities were first rate, and her decision-making was based in a deep concern for others. Her great good sense and sensitivity guided her. These characteristics made her a superb administrator. Best of all, she was a wonderful human being: open, caring, optimistic, cheerful. When you met Jane Stephens, you knew you had just made a friend.
She is survived by her husband Pat, her daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Robert Stubbs of McKinney, Texas, her son and daughter-in-law Robert Stephens and Heather Gumbert of Blacksburg, Virginia, her sister Mary of Kerrville, Texas, grandchildren Xander, Mayabella, and Amelie Stubbs, many nieces and nephews, a legion of friends, and generations of students touched by her profound gifts as an educator.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Canyon Independent School District Foundation, P.O. Box 899, Canyon, Texas 79015.

A note from Jane's husband: Jane had a fabulous career, two wonderful children (ergo, grandchildren), and an admiring husband. We had 50 unbelievably happy years together. Her kids & I have established a fund for people's use during their student teaching semester at WTAMU--the "Jane Stephens Student Teaching Fund." Young folks who never heard of her nor knew of her kindnesses will benefit from the life of a girl from Abilene High for the remainder of the 21st Century.

Memories of Bill LeBus By Truett Austin (AHS Class 1961)

Bill LeBus (class of AHS ’61) passed away from cancer Wed July 17, 2019. He is survived by his wife Mary, who lives in Dallas, and his younger brother Van LeBus, who lives in Abilene.

Bill was born on May 19, 1943 to John and Loleta LeBus in Sulfur, Louisiana. When he was in grade school, his parents moved to Abilene, to 1018 Vine Street, where he lived as he attended Alta Vista Elementary, and South Junior High School, and graduated from Abilene High School in 1961 and McMurry College in 1967.

Bill was always fascinated by hands on science projects from an early age, and was always working on fascinating experiments all through junior high and high school. He built a working Van de Graf generator, a Tesla Coil, a Jacob’s Ladder and other fascinating electrical apparatuses while in junior high. Bill once made a rocket on a clothes line with a metal shell filled with match heads. It exploded when it got a few feet away, sending shrapnel everywhere, but fortunately Bill was behind a barrier.

We lived only about four houses down the block from Bill and we (including my younger sister April and my younger brother Mike) loved to come to his house and see Bill and Van and the things Bill was working on. The other draw was that his mother, Loleta, was a great cook and she was like a second mother to all of us. She sometimes fed us if we happened to be there at meal time.

While Bill was in junior high, he won first place in the Abilene Science Fair for his homemade working Tesla Coil.

Bill loved Physics and his favorite teacher at Abilene High was Vaden P. Hiner, the physics teacher. When Bill went to McMurry, his favorite professor was Dr Virgil Bottom, a world famous physicist and developer of quartz crystal frequency controls in radios and other electronics during WWII and former head of Research and Engineering at Motorola.

Bill was one of several physics students who worked in Dr. Bottom’s Quartz Crystal Lab while a student at McMurry. As a consequence, Dr Bottom was able to get Bill and other physics students who worked in his lab summer jobs at several technology companies, including Motorola, Hewlett Packard, James Knight and Collins Radio. Bill worked with his friend Roger Ward, a fellow McMurry physics grad, at HP in California one summer.

When he graduated, Bill was hired by the Army Signal Corps Lab in Ft. Monmouth, where he worked for his whole career. Bill made several scientific / technological advancements during his career at the Signal Corps.

One technology development he made was a system to use different frequencies of light to kill different types of microorganisms. This was used in cleaning semiconductors and several other applications. The Signal Corps was able to sell the patents for this product to several companies.
Another system Bill helped develop which was first used in the Vietnam War was a system of sensors of various kinds which could detect the proximity of humans, such as Viet Cong along jungle trails.
But Bill’ greatest talent which made him very valuable to the Signal Corps was his project management and problem-solving skills. He traveled to various customers and suppliers and was able to resolve a number of problems which had come to an impasse, and get projects completed successfully, by coming up with creative solutions and establishing a rapport with his counterparts.
This was in part due to not only to Bill’s ingenuity but also to his people skills. Bill seemingly never met a stranger. Within minutes he would gain a rapport with someone he had just met and be carrying on an animated conversation, often soon leading to a friendship.
Bill met his wife Mary at The Army Signal Corps also. She worked there as a programmer. Mary was and is also a very talented musician who plays several instruments, in particular the Harp. She also taught Bill how to play the harp.
Bill and Mary also had five foster children in their home in New Jersey and ministered to them for several years. Mary still keeps in touch with one of them – Kim and her son Sean.
They were both young and energetic and they did a number of fun things together. They kayaked, snow skied, and went dancing. When he was young, Bill loved to dance. He also loved the sea.
After they moved to Dallas, they later had a harp ministry together to children in homeless shelters, and to homeless people at the Salvation Army. Mary also ministers to bed bound patients at Baylor Hospital and to home bound patients. She gives harp lessons and works as a harpist at Baylor.
Bill always had a heart for homeless people. He always carried with him in his car jars of peanut butter or other canned food to hand out to homeless people he saw on the street corners.
This was the kind of caring person Bill was,
Bill had a genetic liver condition which caused his liver begin to fail after they moved to Dallas. Bill was put on a waiting list for a liver transplant, but expectations were that it might be years before he might get one. This meant that he would likely die before he could get a liver transplant. But God somehow did a miracle and provided Bill with a good liver much sooner than expected. It was transplanted in 2006.
This was not the last of the miracles God did for Bill’s health. He lived for many years after that with remarkable little rejection of the liver and in fairly good health. He kept getting good report after good report from his doctors.
But another major health problem arose just three months after the liver transplant. He came down with West Nile virus in Abilene and was care flighted back to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, where he lay in a coma and near death for several weeks. This also happened in 2006. A number of friends interceded in prayer for him and visited him regularly in the hospital.
God did another miracle for Bill! He came out of the coma after much intercessory prayer! Bill began a recovery. He lived for many more years after West Nile and enjoyed life. But he never completely recovered from the West Nile. He would walk with a walker to the end of his life. The story of Bill’s life would not be complete without telling of the Drum Circle. This became one of his passions. Bill would participate in the Drum Circle almost every Wednesday night, with drums and/or harp and/or other instruments. He said more than once that the Drum Circle was the best medicine he had.
When Bill was diagnosed with cancer, I thought God would heal him from this as he had the previous medical challenges. But it was not to be. He passed away on Wed morning at 6 am on July 17 in the hospital. It was a shock to me. I had not known his condition had worsened to that extent.
Bill’s passing was a big loss to all who had known him, especially to Mary. But he lived a very full life and touched a lot of lives in his lifetime. He had compassion on those less fortunate and served the Lord in ministering to them. One day at lunch, he told me he was a Christian. I expect to see him in Heaven some day.

David Douglas LEDDY  [ 2 Sep 1942 - 18 Nov 2012]

Mansfield

David Douglas Leddy, 70, our husband, daddy and grandpa, completed his earthly journey, after living with Alzheimer's for 5 years, Sunday morning, November 18, 2012, with family at his side.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1200 Clover Hill Road, Mansfield, TX. Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 20, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Blessing Funeral Home in Mansfield.

In memory of David, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2630 West Freeway, Suite 100, Ft. Worth, TX 76102, or to Community Hospice of Texas, 1208-B West Henderson, Cleburne, TX 76033.

David was born, in San Angelo, TX, on September 2, 1942, to James "Wilson" Leddy, Sr. and Helen Leddy, part of the boot making Leddy family. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1961 and joined the Air Force where he learned his computer skills. In 1963, He re-met a high school friend, Linda Grant and after just two dates, they married on January 25, 1964, in Abilene. Their lives together were blessed with two children, Lisa and Grant.

After leaving the Air Force, David hired on with IBM, working in computer maintenance, management and technical sales for 30 years. During those 30 years, they lived in Abilene, moving to his dream place in View, TX, for three years, before moving to Mansfield. He and Linda also did a year of "mission" work in Monroe, Louisiana. David was active in all the churches he belonged to by serving on boards, teaching Sunday school, building play grounds and working with youth groups. He enjoyed giving new life to old things. He worked with the Mansfield Adult Literacy Program, helped with the Billy Graham crusade and delivered Meals on Wheels.

After retiring from IBM, David enrolled in Tarrant County College to obtain his HVAC certification. He owned and operated ComforTech HVAC for 13 years. He spent many hours in hot attics to keep others cool.

David loved being outdoors. Hunting, fishing and building things were a few of his favorite things to do. He spent countless hours at his place in May, making improvements on our camping facilities, enjoying the wildlife and visiting the local cafe. When he wasn't at May, he spent many mornings at Waffle House, giving the waitresses a hard time and visiting with the customers.

More than May, he loved his grandchildren, following all of their activities and never missing an opportunity to share a slice of pie or a bowl of ice cream with them. He always had his envelope with pictures of them to share with anyone who would oohh and aahh. Elizabeth Jean Maciukiewicz
November 30, 1942 - September 17, 2021
Obituary
Elizabeth Jean Maciukiewicz, age 78 of Alvin, Texas, passed away Friday, September 17, 2021 in Clear Lake, Texas.  Elizabeth was born November 30, 1942 in Abilene, Texas and was a resident of Alvin for 15 years. Elizabeth, known by Jean to most people,  looked forward to attending any special occasion --  like birthdays and game nights; however, she was especially excited when this event pertained to her grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

Many have been blessed by her cards filled with underlines for emphasis and her pretty cursive signature at the bottom.  She loved her church, Sagemont Church, where she had developed many friendships throughout the years she was a faithful member.  One of Jean’s many hidden talents was bowling. For many years her and her beloved husband spent much of their free time bowling in leagues and tournaments.  Jean loved to make everyone she knew feel important and one of the ways she did that was by wishing her family and friends a very unique happy birthday or happy anniversary on Facebook, often being the first to do so.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, James and Mary Lester; husband Michael “Henry” Maciukiewicz; daughter Norma Jean Foller; sister Laura Epperson; two brothers Joe Lester and David Lester; nephew Joe; and niece Sonya.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Susan Garza and husband Hank, Christy Martinez and husband Armando, Valarie McCoy and husband Todd; son Michael Henry Maciukiewicz Jr. and wife Sarah; brothers James Lester and wife Carol, Ronnie Lester and wife Margie, Glyn Lester; and brother-in-law Doug Epperson; 12 grandchildren Harley, Justin, Cassie, Hank, Joey, Tori, JT, Dylan, Emily, Lucy, Saliah and Linus; 5 great-grandchildren Jaselle, Logan, Ava, Luke, Harper; and many nieces, and great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Scott Funeral Home in Alvin, TX.  A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 23 at 10:00 AM at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, TX.

Karen Lyn LUSBY WIGGINS [ 2 Jun 1943 Fort Worth, Texas - 1 Nov 2017 Bunda, Tanzania, Africa]

Blog post of Karen's husband, Charles Wiggins. Bunda, Tanzania, Africa Monday, November 6, 2017 “She said ’till death do us part. She meant it, too.” — Me There is just no way to be prepared for the things you may have to do in this life, especially if you’ve been living for the last twelve years as an expat in a developing country in Africa. There is just no way to know how to get ready to have the woman who has been more than half of you for over a half a century die in your arms. No way to prepare to deal with the U.S. Embassy in Dar Es Salaam in the middle of the night to get the documents and direction you need immediately. I’ve got to say the embassy was so wonderful, polite, and caring—even the man who answered the phone that night. At first, we thought his name was Justin Maneen, but then figured out he was saying he was “just a marine” and not an official. But the official he woke up was very nice, and we were able to get everything delivered to us electronically by 9:30 the next morning. Dr. Chris and Shaban were also unbelievable as none of us slept, and they worked with the hospital here as the only morgue in the area was full but they managed to get a private room until the next morning when Dr. Chris arranged an ambulance to take her body to Mwanza for the cremation (Karen’s request) with he and Shaban going along. John and I couldn’t go (physically, emotionally, medically, and logistically), but we had missionary friends there, Dave and Becky Helsby who attended the cremation and did a Christian service with prayers for her. We’ve known them for the twelve years we’ve been here and more than once they have come through for us. I’m sure there is paperwork no matter where death happens, but in a foreign country—you just double or triple it. Still, God’s guiding Hand was everywhere, and everything went smoothly. In a week or two, we will scatter her ashes in Lake Victoria as she requested. She wanted her final resting place to not only be in Africa but in a place that could be seen from space. As always, Mama Africa tends to get what Mama Africa wants. Shaban has already started on organizing the preschool financial papers and has promised that he will do whatever we need to keep St. Caryn’s Academy going at this same level for at least another ten years. I was freaking out more than a little as I couldn’t find her life insurance policy (she did all the organization and filing) but yesterday, the woman who works with John on solar projects rode the bus up from Mwanza, rolled up her sleeves and for several hours cleaned my office and went through the filing cabinets and came up with the policy—in a folder marked by my wife as “Life Insurance Policies” of course. This lady was so very helpful and nice and even brought cookies and banana bread. On top of all the wonderful and heartfelt comments on Facebook, some friends have been chatting with me through “Messenger” and helping me keep my head above water. One man in Nairobi and one man in Los Angeles. Thank God for the wonderful friends who have been and are supporting John and me. At first, I didn’t want to have a memorial service here because I didn’t think I could handle it. Medical issues will keep me from physically attending, so I wasn’t sure I wanted one. Took me a while to realize it wasn’t for me. John’s going to have me attend electronically, so I’ll be there. There are many, many people here who loved Mama Africa and need the closure as much as any. We will be having her memorial service on Sunday, November 12th, at 2:00 P.M. at the Bunda Methodist Church which is next door to us. The time will be about five in the morning in Arkansas and Texas if anyone wants to be aware and pray along. I had some idea of the impact she had had on the lives of others but have been just blown away by the response to her death. She touched countless other teachers, students, parents of students, friends, church members, family members, and total strangers. Several of our missionary friends will be at the service singing Karen’s favorite hymn, “Here I am, Lord” in English and Swahili. Other friends helped by loaning us money to cover costs before we could get the money transferred here from the U.S. Again, and again, we have been overwhelmed by the response and outpouring of love being shown to her and to us. God is providing me with comfort, strength, and resilience to get me through and beyond this so that His work here will continue. John and I are committed to keeping the schools and as many other projects as we can maintain going strong for as long as we can. We can do no other. When a three-year-old orphan needs something to eat, a place to learn, and a place to experience love and hope, we will show that child the love “Mama Africa” would have shown her. It’s what we do.

Aubrey Davis "Davis" McAULEY (20 Oct 1942 - 31 Jan 2012)  (Cancer)

In Memory of
Davis McAuley
October 20, 1942 - January 31, 2012

County says goodbye to former editor McAuley
Wednesday, February 1, 2012 | Cyndi Wright Bastrop County will say an emotional goodbye to longtime journalist, artist and community activist Davis McAuley, after he died Tuesday morning. McAuley had been battling cancer for some months.

McAuley will not only be remembered for his long service to the Bastrop Advertiser, but also for the way he documented local history and mentored many young reporters – as well as other co-workers.

"I didn't study journalism in college, I was an art major, but I really learned a lot from Davis," said Janice Butler, publisher of the Advertiser from 1989 to 2007 and a close friend. "The biggest and most important thing I learned from Davis was how to treat people whether they were good, bad or indifferent. They were still people and deserved respect. We learned how to tell their story accurately."

McAuley retired from the Advertiser on June 6, 2008, culminating a run of more than two decades in two stints. McAuley was known for his grammar skills and news judgment. He served as editor from 1986 to 2008 and had previously worked at the Advertiser from 1978 to 1981.

"Davis was one of the best journalists I have worked for," said current assistant editor Terry Hagerty. "He always emphasized writing with brevity and impact. He also had a dry wit that was much appreciated in the newsroom."

A more in-depth story about McAuley and his contributions to Bastrop County will appear in the Saturday edition of the Bastrop Advertiser.

McAuley's family is inviting everyone to come celebrate his life at a wake, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4 beginning at 4 p.m. at Upstart's Annabelle Center, 1508 Cypress St. in Bastrop.

Arrangements under the direction of Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home, Bastrop, TX.

Larry Joe Miller  (4 Jun 1943 - 3 Nov 2017)

Larry Joe Miller, Hollywood artist in residence who toured with the Clash, dies at 74
By TONYA ALANEZ SUN SENTINEL |NOV 08, 2017

He was the styling Rockabilly dude seen bopping around Hollywood on his motor scooter, teaching painting classes at the ArtsPark, plucking an upright bass on a stage or street corner, or playing ukulele on his front porch.
Hollywood hepcat and artist in residence Larry Joe Miller has died after suffering a heart attack Nov. 3. He was 74.
Frontman for the Rockabilly Rockets and known as “Guppy” to his grandkids, Miller toured with the Clash, was a U.S. Air Force veteran, former president of the Broward Art Guild and current proprietor of an art studio and gallery at One Young Circle.

With his slicked-back hair, dark shades and two-tone shoes, Miller fit Hollywood’s art scene like a glove, said Broward County Commissioner and Hollywood resident Beam Furr.
“Cool as cool can be; he just epitomized it,” Furr said. “There’s a hole in the heart of Hollywood with his passing.”

“Nobody, bar none, dressed cooler than Larry Joe,” his wife, Amy Miller, said. “He had the coolest hair, he was the best dresser, he was one styling dude.”
But it wasn’t Miller’s stylish ways that made him a standout human being, said his son, Clay Miller, 24.
At his ArtsPark studio, Miller presided over printmaking classes, paint parties and monthly paint-for-fun nights.
“Creativity and charisma, those are the two words that I would say described him best,” Clay Miller said. “He took and he applied those gifts and his incredible passion for the arts and gave it back to the community. The world is missing someone with a true presence and a truly kind heart.”
A collector of late ‘50s and early ‘60s Populuxe era memorabilia, including a wall full of atomic clocks and more than 100 boomerang-shaped ashtrays, Miller had most recently turned his collecting energies to ukuleles.
“He’s a serious musician and a longtime musician, the best stand-up bass player in South Florida,” Amy Miller said. “But even though he’s a serious musician and a serious artist, he didn’t take himself seriously.”

Admirers remembered Miller as “one of a kind,” an “SF legend” and “class guy” as they poured out their condolences on Miller’s Facebook page.
“He was always the coolest cat in the room,” said one post.
“An amazing artist, rocker and all around brilliant character,” said another.
Born in Flint, Mich., Miller’s childhood was spent on U.S. Air Force bases in Manchester, England, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Abilene, Texas, which is where he graduated high school. Miller migrated to South Florida in 1976.
Aside from his wife, Amy, and son, Clay, Miller is survived by three other sons: Tyler Miller, 31, John Paul Miller, 49, and Dennis Green, 54, and seven grandchildren.
A celebration of life is planned for 5 p.m. Nov. 18 at Miller’s studio and gallery at the Hollywood ArtsPark, One Young Circle.

He was an talented artist as is his brother, Stanley.

Several months after graduating from Abilene High in May 1961, Randy got into some minor police trouble and shot and killed himself.

Lana Carole MIMS CHAMBERS [27 Dec 1941 - 3 Oct 2023]

Lana passed away this past Tuesday, 03 Oct 2023 from cancer.  TLana Carol Chambers entered eternal life to be with her Lord and Savior on October 3, 2023.
Lana was born and raised in Abilene, TX. She received a Bachelor's degree from MacMurray College, and a Masters Degree in Education from Hardin-Simmons University. During this time only one in three college degrees were attained by women. She then moved to Las Cruces, NM to teach at White Sands Missile Range Elementary. It was there that she met her husband, Bill, with whom she recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Lana was a steadfast Christian and lived her life in the spirit of 1 Corinthians 13:13, and Matthew 22:37-39. She attended church regularly and made many friends in her Bible study class. Her faith sustained her throughout her entire life. It maintained through a battle with, and triumph over, breast cancer over 30 years ago. She leaned on her faith in her final years as she wrestled with Alzheimer's Disease and finally, follicular lymphoma. Over the past five years, spending time with her granddaughter, Brooke, filled her with the same joy her mother had with her children, Marcus and Brett.
She had hope for a better future for her children and others. Her contribution to this was as a life-long educator. She was a first grade teacher at Dona Ana Elementary for over 35 years. After retiring from Las Cruces Public Schools, she taught young dyslexic boys and girls who had learning difficulties at the local Scottish Rite Learning Center. Her efforts allowed countless young people to love to learn and to read again. She dedicated her free time to coach her son, Marcus, in the High Noon Soccer League, and served on the NM Youth Soccer State Board for over a decade.
Lana was a loving daughter, wife, mother and friend. She loved Texas and the Dallas Cowboys. Her "Texas twang" was adored by so many. But above all things, she loved the Lord God with all her heart, and her friends and neighbors as she would herself. She exemplified love in the form of kindness. She was kind to anyone and everyone she met. Never has there been a more selfless person, ready to serve others and the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Clarine Mims, and brother Bill (Deborah) Mims Jr. She is survived by her husband, William H Chambers III, brother Joe Mac Mims, sons Marcus and Brett Chambers (Ryan Rhodes), step-son James (Rachel) Chambers, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Sonoma Ranch in Las Cruces, NM at 10:00am on October 13, 2023. Burial and graveside services will follow at Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donating to an organization near to her heart- Scottish Rite Learning Center of Las Cruces, PO Box 357, Las Cruces, NM 88004.

Wylie Austin Newman (1942 - April 14, 2016)

Wylie Austin Newman died unexpectedly on Thursday April 14, 2016 at the age of 73.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday April 19, 2016 at 2:00p.m. in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 West Lake Rd. Abilene, TX 79601. Visitation for family and friends will be at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. from 5pm - 7pm on Monday April 18, 2016.

Wylie was born in Abilene where he lived out his life. His love for sports began at College Heights Elementary. Wylie played football with the final group of Moser's Boys on the Team of the Century at Abilene High School. He was Captain of the football team his senior year. After high school he remained a loyal Abilene High fan as a season ticket holder and later in life listening to every game on the the radio. When he wasn't following football he loved to fish. Many summer nights were spent sitting on the dock, fishing in the dark until the middle of the night. The only fish story that can be confirmed was winning 3rd place at Hubbard Creek Kean Bass Classic with his brother-in-law. He said "if we had proper storage for the fish on the way to weighing we would have won one first". Extending his love for sports, he coached both his daughters in softball. He treated all team players as his own children, driving them to and from practice, teaching many how to play the sport and he spent extra time with anyone who wanted to learn.

He was employed at Fort Worth Pipe, NuCorp, Bandag and after retirement he drove a school bus for AISD.

Wylie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and coach.

His life revolved around his granddaughters. The oldest granddaughters referred to him as 'Big Guy' - he was their hero. He taught them to swim by sitting in their wading pool, taught them to ride a bike by riding with them, introduced his granddaughters (and nephews) to his love for the taste of lemons, and spending many hours outdoors with them learning and discovering. Eight months ago he was blessed with his 3rd grandchild. She was his every breath. The last few months he spent every day with her teaching her to 'blow raspberries' and 'thumbs up'. The room lit up when the two of them were together.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pat (Patterson) Newman; two daughters, Vicki Plank of Hubbard Creek Lake and Lori Femiak of San Antonio; a son-in-law he called his own, Brad Femiak of San Antonio; three granddaughters, Cheyenne Plank, Dakota Plank and Nikki Femiak; one brother, Jim Newman (Lynn) of Hawley; and two sisters, Dorothye Grooms (Buck) of Ft. Worth and Francis Davis (Bob) of Justin.

Wylie is preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Betty Newman; one brother, Jack Newman; two sisters, Nancy Schmidt and Linda Newman; and one granddaughter, Taylor Plank.
