* Gerhart, John Deuel [21 Jul 1943 - 15 July 2003]

John Deuel Gerhart was born on 21 Jul 1943 in Abilene, Texas, the son of Eleanor and the Rev. Willis P. Gerhart. His father served for many years as the pastor of The Church of the Heavenly Rest (Episcopal) in Abilene.

John attended South Junior High School, Abilene and the St. Stephen's School in Austin (* instead of attending Abilene High School), then earned a degree in English and French history and literature at Harvard in 1966. While at Harvard, he wrote for the Crimson, and took a year off in 1963-64 to teach high school in Tanzania. After graduation, he spent a year on a traveling fellowship at Makerere University in Uganda. He then did graduate work at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School, earning a Masters in Public Affairs in 1969 and a PhD in 1974. In 2001 Princeton's graduate faculties named him as one of their hundred most notable alumni of the 20th century.

From 1969 until 1998 John worked in the international division of the Ford Foundation in various capacities: as advisor to the Kenyan government and Botswana Ministry of Agriculture, assistant representative for East Africa, representative for the Middle East and North Africa, deputy vice president for international programs, and regional director for Africa and Middle East programs. He was the foundation's first representative for Southern Africa, and opened the Johannesburg office in 1993. His work at Ford involved many aspects of life in developing countries, including rural development, women's rights and reproductive health, university development, land reform, human rights, and the promotion of third world arts, culture, and indigenous philanthropy.

From 1998 to 2002, John served with distinction as president of The American University in Cairo. His major achievement in these years was to complete the architectural planning and raise money for the construction of a new $250 million campus for the university. In recognition of his contributions to higher education in Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak in 2002 awarded him the country's First Class Decoration for Arts and Sciences. In June 2002 AUC conferred on him the degree of doctor of humane letters honoris causa.

John was an avid collector of African art, a gifted story-teller, and an enthusiastic birder. At one time the American Birding Association ranked him the top amateur birder for the continent of Africa. He liked to tell students that we cannot determine the length of our lives, but we can determine their depth and breadth. In this respect his own life was a model for many colleagues and friends to whom his wisdom, humor, and generosity were a source of inspiration.

John Gerhart died on 15 July 2003 at the age of 59 from cancer of the appendix.

Gerhart is survived by his wife Gail, his brother Harry, his daughter, Leslie Katherine, and his son, Nathaniel Gillam.

On July 26, John's ashes were interred in the memorial garden at St. Stephen's following a funeral conducted by his mentor and friend, the Rev. James Tucker.

Michael Grant WAYMAN  [6 Mar 1943 - 22 July 2019]

The San Diego Union-Tribune

Michael Grant, San Diego Union columnist and Grossmont College professor, 1943-2019

By PETER ROWE JULY 23, 2019

Last Thursday, Michael Grant asked his wife to help move him from his sick bed to their living room.

"There's a lot of happiness in this moment," he said, settling into his favorite chair.

"How so?" Karen Grant asked.

"We know our future, we've had our past," he said. "What better way for it to come to a close."

Grant, a former San Diego Union columnist and chair of Grossmont College's journalism program, died Monday after refusing further treatment for heart and lung ailments. He was 76.

A Texas native, Grant commanded a large following as the Union's features columnist from 1978 until his retirement from the newspaper in 1992. At least three times a week, he delivered sharp observations on life in San Diego and elsewhere, with a voice that was folksy and cultured, sometimes prickly and always compassionate.

"In a way, Mike was a dream to edit," said John Muncie, Grant's editor from 1985 through 1992. "I say ‘in a way ‘because he was such a unique voice and he had a unique role as well, as a columnist. My job was to get out of his way — I didn't have much to edit."

Even in print, his voice was personal and engaging, delivering down-home wisdom and sophisticated humor with a west Texas twang.

"His insight, his ability to perceive motives, his eye for detail, his impatience with incompetence, and his razor-sharp wit were the reasons you read him," said Dean Nelson, director of Point Loma Nazarene University's journalism program. "In today's media world there aren't many people who are themselves the destination for readers. But he was."

Along for the ride

Michael Grant was born on March 6, 1943, in Abilene. After earning an English degree from Stanford, he served in the U.S. Army as an artillery officer in West Germany. Honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in 1969, he returned to west Texas as a sportswriter for The Abilene Reporter-News, working there until migrating to San Diego in 1972.

As a reporter here, Grant covered everything from La Costa tennis tournaments to the death of Elvis Presley. In 1978, he became the lead columnist in Currents, the Union's lifestyle section.

A typical week of columns could range from a passionate homage to the potato chip, to a humorous take on a looming paper shortage, to an intimate account of a reunion of World War II-era U.S. Army Air Corps veterans. His essays, only about 720 words, ranged far and wide. Thousands of readers came along for the ride.

"Most people didn't read Michael Grant's columns because of the subject matter," said Point Loma Nazarene's Nelson. "They read them because he was the one who wrote them. If he wrote it, we read it."

Twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, he won the Mark Twain Award from the Associated Press News Executives Council of California-Nevada in 1989 for his first-person account of tracking down the father who had abandoned him at birth.

Married three times, Grant strove to connect every branch of his family.

"We call ourselves a staircase family, because there are all these steps involved," said Karen Grant, who married Michael in 2005. "But Michael kept it all together."

‘Ruthless bulldog'

When the San Diego Union and Evening Tribune merged in February 1992, employees were given the option of taking a buyout. Grant, recently remarried, was among the many who decided to start another career.

In fact, he was already well-launched in two fields. In 1990, he began a 22-year run as a full-time professor in Grossmont College's Media Communications Department. And soon after departing the Union, he would publish "San Diego Tapestry," his second book after a 1987 cookbook, "Hearty Fare From a Country Kitchen."

He wrote three more books: "Deep in the Heart of Texas" and "American Southwest: A People and Their Landscape," two coffee table volumes, both appearing in 1995, and "Warbirds: How They Played the Game," a 2004 look at the successful football program of his alma mater, Abilene High.

At Grossmont, where he served as the department chair twice (1997-2001 and 2008-2009), Grant established himself as a demanding instructor who drilled his students in journalistic ethics and best practices.

"At the time, I thought he was this ruthless bulldog reporter," said Lorena Ruggero, one of his students and now Grossmont's director of college and community relations. "But he helped build myself as a public relations professional."

He retired from full-time duties in 2012, teaching an additional two years at Grossmont with the title Professor Emeritus Media Communications.

At home, Grant was a dedicated chef who entered and judged chili contests, played Elvis and Johnny Cash, read voraciously and entertained a wide circle of friends and family.

"He was smart and funny and generous," Karen Grant said. "He had a love of life and music and good food and puppies. He was the most emotionally generous human being I had ever met."

"As a father," Tyler Grant wrote in an email, "Dad wanted us to be happy and genuine. He was not stern, but he would tell us what he needed to. I couldn't have asked for a better life, better parents, or a more beloved 'Staircase Family.'"

Grant's second wife, Meredith Freeman Grant, succumbed to breast cancer in 2000. He is survived by his third wife, Karen Grant of La Mesa; two children, Jessie Bell of Humboldt County and Tyler Grant of Fort Collins, Colo.; three step-children, Bill Werve (Erika) of Kenosha, Wis., Parrish (Gwynne) Freeman of Salt Lake City, and Branan Freeman of Big Sur; and seven grandchildren.

He is also survived by his first wife, Lynn Grant of Jamul.

The family plans a private tribute to Grant on Sept. 10 (2019).

"Because that's the day we met," Karen Grant said, thinking back to 2004. "He was a sentimental guy."

Terry Ann "Teri" HALE - BALDWIN [12 Jul 1943 - 7 Mar 2023]

OBITUARY

Girdner Funeral Home

 Teri Ann Baldwin born Teri Ann Hale to Joe and Mary Bob Hale July 12, 1943 passed away quietly in peace at her home Tuesday March 7th with her husband Eddie Baldwin of 59 years by her side. They dated while attending Abilene High School and graduated together in 1961, the same year she was voted Flashlight Queen, then went onto marry in 1963. They both attended McMurry College. Teri earned a BS degree in Art. She taught art at St John’s Elementary school for 2 years and then art at Mann Middle School from 1977 to 2011. She was passionate about art and especially sharing and teaching it to her students. Students from over the decades remember her as adults and would frequently see her out in Abilene and greet her with a smile and to say hello. She loved to travel and loved all things European. During her employment with the the Abilene Independent School District, she went as a chaperone on a Student trip to Italy, France and England. She and Eddie traveled to Hawaii, Catalina Island, up and down the west and east coast, Mexico and Jamaica. She would bring back ideas, drawings, photos, tokens, trinkets, souvenirs and anything she could use as props for her students to paint, sketch or sculpt. Besides spending time with friends and having holiday parties, she and Eddie spent as much time as they could between the east coast with their daughter Lauri Patterson and her family and the west coast with their son Brett Baldwin and his family. Teri held a special bond with the ocean. She wanted to see it, be near it, on it or in it.After retiring from the school district Teri didn’t slow down. She opened a booth in Barrow Street Mall selling assorted items, antiques and became involved in the Abilene Women’s Club and The Society for the Preservation of Quaint Old Homes. Spring and summer were all she talked about in winter, what emergency procedures and protocols she had put into place to save the plants that had no chance of survival. But the perennials always came back and she always replaced the annuals, she lived for this, flowers blooming, especially geraniums, by the pool. So the beauty in art and gardening spilled out into the physical manifestations of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Forever impacted by her life includes so many. She is survived by husband Eddie Baldwin. Son Brett Baldwin and wife Terri, their children Brandon Baldwin and Brittni Baldwin Burke, her husband Andrew Burke and sweet great grand daughter Eleanor. All of California. Daughter Lauri Baldwin Patterson and her husband Troy Patterson, along with their daughters Londyn Baldwin and Saylor Patterson. Rita Jane HANKINS JOWERS THOMPSON ( 17 Aug 1943 - 31 Oct 2014)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Obituary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rita Jane Thompson, 71, was wrapped in the arms of Jesus on Friday, October 31, 2014 as she passed away from complications following knee surgery. She was, no doubt, met by the love of her life, John, as she was reunited with her husband of 38 years after being apart for the past 3. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 1:30pm at Southern Hills Church of Christ, with burial to follow at Texas Veteran’s Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at North’s Funeral Home, 242 Orange Street, on Monday, November 3rd from 5 to 7pm.
Rita was born August 17, 1943 in Memphis, Texas to Hank and Lenora Hankins. She spent her childhood with her brother, Jack, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins as they shared their time together with family between Memphis, Quanah, and Abilene. Her family moved to Abilene and Rita attended school, graduating from Abilene High School in 1961. She then attended Abilene Christian College, where she obtained her Bachelors of Science in Education in 2 ½ years. She married Terry Joe Jowers and they moved to Midland, where she taught elementary school and he was a member of the Midland Police Department. They were blessed with two sons, Mark and Tony. In 1972, Terry was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Consequently, Rita and the boys moved back to Abilene, where she ultimately met and married John Glenn Thompson in 1973. John later adopted the two boys, and the family eventually made their home in Abilene after living in Dallas and Lake Jackson, Texas. The family grew when John and Rita welcomed their third son, Glenn in 1976 and later, their baby girl, Ginger, in 1978.
Rita enjoyed being a homemaker and an educator during her children’s childhood. She also volunteered her time as a member of the Auxiliary at Hendricks Medical Center, she was on the Board of Directors of the Ben Richey Boys Ranch, and was the President of the Dixie Little League for many years. She participated in the Abilene Garden Club, and was a member of the women’s sorority Beta Sigma Phi. Rita consistently supported her children’s schools by being a room mother, PTA member and officer, and feeding many, many of her children’s friends through the years. Rita was known for keeping her kitchen stocked and their swimming pool full of kids, as their home was always the gathering place due to Rita’s warm nature and ability to “mother” all. She was affectionately referred to as “Mama Rita” to countless kids throughout the years.
In 1995, Rita obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from Tarleton State University. By this time, the family had relocated to Austin, and she began serving children as an elementary school Counselor. She enjoyed this season of her life until she retired from the Austin Independent School District in 2005.
John and Rita then moved back to Abilene, built a home together, and enjoyed their retirement with family and friends. They adopted 4 dogs from the local shelter, chased their 5 grandbabies between Bastrop and Sweetwater, and were active in the Southern Hills Church of Christ family. Rita enjoyed gardening, sewing, decorating, and travelling.
Following John’s passing in 2011, Rita moved to Sweetwater, Texas to be close to her daughter and family in 2012. She enjoyed meeting new friends, becoming a member of the 4th and Elm Church of Christ, and volunteered as a member of the Auxiliary at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. She had a heart for children, and supported the Cornerstone Christian School with her gifts.
Her parents, Hank and Lenora Hankins, and her brother, Jack Hankins, preceded Rita in death. Her four children that loved her immensely survive her: Mark Thompson and spouse, Scott Rubel, of Austin; Tony Thompson and wife, Heather, of Bastrop; Glenn Thompson of Lakeway, Texas; and Ginger Paty and husband, Cody, of Sweetwater. She is also survived by 5 beautiful grandchildren that she adored: Hannah Thompson and Katie Thompson of Bastrop, Texas and Claire Paty, Gregory Paty, and Meredith Paty of Sweetwater, Texas.
A Tribute of the Life of Martha Nell Havins-Watson
    January 16, 1943 – August 13, 2020
    By Sherry Yancey-Cumby
Martha and I were classmates at South Junior High School in Abilene, Texas where I met her in 8th grade; we were Abilene High School Eagles in the Class of 1961.  She was the note queen of the campus…in my book. I was the one who always owed her a note because she would always respond with record speed. Ideas, plans, and concerns were penciled at rapid speed on notebook paper, folded into a small square, and handed off as we changed classes in the hall or sat near each other in class.  We had no idea how writing notes was one of the best lessons we would adopt for a lifetime of joy. Over the years, notes became letters mailed through the post office; later, emails - written at any time of the day or night and sent to each other through cyber-space. Sometimes, short texts on smart phones were exchanged. The interests remained: I loved reading her thoughts.
Martha is in heaven today because of a decision she made as a young teen to come to church, hear the good news of Jesus Christ, and respond to the Holy Spirit leading her to admit her need for a Savior, confess her sins and repent, and receive the greatest gift of all gifts: Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior.
She followed the Lord in water baptism and lived a spirit-filled life through all of the challenges she faced over the years.
Martha’s faith became sight the moment she breathed her last breath on earth and was transported to heaven. For the Bible says, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (II Corinthians 5:8 KJV). She is safe at home in the arms of Jesus.
Martha was a woman of sensitivity, sincerity, security, sentimentality, serenity and stability. She was faithful, a true fruit-bearer, forbearing, and fascinating.
She loved God, her family, His church, her friends, her country, people she passed on the street, strangers, and people she heard about over the news and through family and friends. Her heart was as big as Texas. She lived well, she loved heartily, and she made provision to live forever simply by believing and trusting God’s word.
We want to thank you for all that you did as a loving family to keep Martha comfortable and her needs met. How she loved you! How proud she was of each one of you! Her voice would include a giggle of laughter and delight as she spoke about you and told us of your latest adventure or accolade because she knew we loved her family as she loved ours: unreservedly.
Martha would share a concern for prayer because she knew prayers always make a difference.  Martha was a Christian who saw the best in others. She prayed, loved, and waited until the person for whom she stood in the gap interceding for began to move closer and closer to God. Any encouragement at all brought her to pray and believe even stronger that they were moving closer, and closer to God.
The prevenient grace of God is still at work for those who have never truly admitted their need for Jesus Christ as their very own personal Lord and Savior as Martha did. Martha’s prayers for us have no expiration date. What can we do to honor her life? What would she want more than anything else from each one of us?  She would want us to know and embrace John 3:16… “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Martha moved to heaven Thursday, August 13, 2020. May we each commit in our hearts today that we will move closer and closer to God and one day awaken to His literal presence to see Him face to face. She is there: safe and secure for all eternity. We will see her again.
Romans 8: 38-39 says, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
You will remain in our thoughts and prayers as we grieve the passing of our precious one: Martha Nell Havins-Watson. Our prayers will be heard. Our tears will be kept in a vial by God. Each one of us will learn how to live on earth without her presence. May we choose to be strong and have courage. We are one day closer to seeing her again.
“…Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into your joy” (Matthew 25:21)
